Subsistence Wages and Household Production: Clearing the Way for an Analysis of Class and Gender

A theoretical analysis of capitalist relations of production shows that both the subsistence wage rate and the allocation of workers’ time between household and wage labor are determined by the household production function. In and of itself, this analysis tells us nothing at all about gender relations. It does, however, enable us to distinguish clearly between gender and class relations and thus to investigate their interrelationship.
